WAUKESHA, WIS. — Matthew Wexler and Sarah Seol highlighted Saturday’s fencing activities at the Great Lakes Conference Championships at Catholic Memorial High School.

Wexler, a senior competing for Highland Park/Deerfield, won the men’s epee over Yinxiao Wang of Culver Military Academy (Ind.).

Seol, a junior competing for Stevenson, won the women’s saber over New Trier’s Charlotte Stender.

Wexler’s tournament victory gives him four on the season, which he said is a team record, and is especially satisfying after his sixth-place finish at the University High Invitational in Chicago on Jan. 11.

Wexler was the No. 1 seed in men’s epee entering the event and lived up to the expectations of Highland Park/Deerfield coach Todd Kerschke, who demanded more from his standout after his sixth-place finish.

“I kind of threw down the gauntlet a little bit with him, and he rose to the occasion,” Kerschke said.

Seol’s saber coach, Gordon Gandy, predicted she would win the saber final 15-8. Seol fell just short of that projection, winning 15-10.

With no seniors among Stevenson’s female sabers, Gandy said the group will be tough to beat next season with Seol and eighth-place finisher Morgan Kaplan returning. Kaplan’s a junior as well.

“Next year, nobody should beat them,” Gandy said.

New Trier took home two individual titles. Sydney Weiss won the women’s epee title while Eli Gitelman, Kirk Robinson and Don Sirivat finished first, second and third, respectively, in the men’s saber.
