OPRF-grad Levin off to hot start with Grinnell

Oak Park-River Forest alumnus Aaron Levin chipped in nine of the 128 points his Grinnell College men’s basketball team posted in a Jan. 2 win against Beloit College in Grinnell, Iowa.
Levin, a junior forward from River Forest, has helped the Pioneers to an 8-2 start this season. Through 10 games, he is the team’s third leading scorer (12.1 points per game) and third leading rebounder (4.2 rebounds per game). Levin is also second on the team in 3-pointers made (25), while shooting 40.3 percent from beyond the arc.
For the Grinnell women’s basketball team, Niles North alumna Alissa Hirsch recorded nine points, three assists and three steals in the Pioneers’ 62–55 win against Beloit on Jan. 2 in Grinnell.
With the win, the Pioneers are now 5-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
Hirsch, a freshman guard from Skokie, was the team’s third leading scorer (9.9 points per game) through 10 games, nine of which she started. She also leads the team in assists (3.9 per game) and steals (1.3 per game).
Lake Zurich alumnus Connor Mooney, a senior guard for the Loras College men’s basketball team, led the Duhawks to a 74–67 victory against Wisconsin-Stout Dec. 29 in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. Mooney finished with a team-high 14 points. His teammate Josh Bruns, a junior guard and Lake Forest graduate, chipped in four points and four rebounds. Mirko Grcic, a freshman forward who is also from Lake Zurich, added two points and three rebounds.
After Loras dropped its next game, a 73–72 overtime loss to Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Dec. 30 in Wisconsin Dells, the team is 5-6 on the season. Mooney sits second on the team in scoring (10.5
points per game). Bruns is averaging 6.5 points and 3.8 rebounds. And Grcic is averaging 2.5 points per game in just 10.9 minutes per contest as a freshman.
On the women’s side, junior forward Katie Wheeler helped lead the Duhawks basketball team to its sixth-straight win with a 56–54 victory against St. Norbert College Dec. 31 in De Pere, Wis. The Loyola graduate had a well-rounded game with four points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.
Wheeler has started 10 of the team’s first 11 games and sits third on the team in scoring, with 8.7 points per game, and rebounding, with 5.3 per game.
