Glenbrook North came into this regional title game as the prohibitive favorite. Ah, perfect. “We love being the underdogs,” said Stevenson sophomore Zach Novoselsky, following his team’s surprising 7-2 victory over visiting GBN in Saturday’s Class 4A final. “No one expected us to win. But we did,” added Novoselsky, who is known by his teammates as Big Z. “We believe in ourselves. And that’s all we need.” Big Z, who is the son of a big man in former NFL tight end Brett Novoselsky (Bears and Vikings, 1988-94), had one of the game’s big moments, when he singled home two … ]]> Sun, 27 May 2012 00:12:00 -0500 http://lincolnshire.suntimes.com/sports/12799225-419/baseball-novoselsky-comes-through-as-stevenson-upsets-glenbrook-north-in-regional-final.html http://lincolnshire.suntimes.com/sports/12799225-419/baseball-novoselsky-comes-through-as-stevenson-upsets-glenbrook-north-in-regional-final.html <![CDATA[ Boys Tennis: Deerfield’s Brown wins singles title at State; Lake Forest claims 3rd-place trophy ]]>

When former Deerfield High School tennis star Mike Morrison won four state singles championships from 1983-86, his father Chuck Morrison doubled as his coach. Dad Morrison was a spectator at Saturday’s state meet at Hersey in Arlington Heights, and what he saw was the second Warrior in program history to capture a state singles title. Deerfield senior Jason Brown, the top seed, trounced Marian Catholic senior Julian Childers 6-1, 6-2 to cap a 38-4 season. “Jason’s maturity as a player is one of his biggest assets,” said Chuck Morrison before Brown downed Hinsdale Central freshman Martin Joyce 6-3, 6-1 in … ]]> Sat, 26 May 2012 21:06:01 -0500 http://lincolnshire.suntimes.com/sports/12797711-419/boys-tennis-deerfields-brown-wins-singles-title-at-state-lake-forest-claims-3rd-place-trophy.html http://lincolnshire.suntimes.com/sports/12797711-419/boys-tennis-deerfields-brown-wins-singles-title-at-state-lake-forest-claims-3rd-place-trophy.html <![CDATA[ Boys Volleyball: Stevenson, Buffalo Grove fall in sectional semifinals ]]>

When the Stevenson boys volleyball team rallied from a seven-point deficit to send its Barrington Sectional semifinal against Zion-Benton to a third game, the Zee-Bees looked directly to their previous match for answers. Zion-Benton, the No. 6 seed in the sectional, dropped its second game against Vernon Hills on May 23, but responded by coming back to win the match. The Zee-Bees did the exact same thing against Stevenson, enduring the Patriots’ momentum before controlling the third game en route to a 25-23, 23-25, 25-16 victory. “I told the team, ‘I have so much confidence (in us),’” said Zion-Benton’s Josh … ]]> Sat, 26 May 2012 12:26:01 -0500 http://lincolnshire.suntimes.com/sports/12788655-419/boys-volleyball-stevenson-buffalo-grove-fall-in-sectional-semifinals.html http://lincolnshire.suntimes.com/sports/12788655-419/boys-volleyball-stevenson-buffalo-grove-fall-in-sectional-semifinals.html <![CDATA[ Basketball: Breakthrough Basketball camp on tap ]]>

Stevenson, Buffalo Grove, Zion-Benton and Barrington are moving on. The four regional champs will compete in the Barrington Sectional on Friday night. Buffalo Grove High School senior Robert Hawkins pitched a five-inning no-hitter against Wheeling High School in the regular season. What would he do for an encore against the same team in an IHSA sectional quarterfinal Monday? No perfect game was in the offing, and although he yielded four hits he actually pitched significantly better than during his no-hitter. Hawkins worked a complete-game shutout, striking out eight and issuing no walks. In his no-hitter, he walked seven batters. The Bison backed him up with four runs on six hits, all doubles. Stevenson girls lacrosse coach Janette Eichfeld does not pause for even one second when asked to assess where this year’s squad ranks in program history. “This was our best team,” she said. Stevenson (14-6), the No. 13 seed, rode the momentum of a seven-match winning streak all the way to Monday’s Illinois High School Women’s Lacrosse Association sectional title match against No. 4 Hinsdale Central at Oak Park-River Forest. Two on top. Vernon Hills and Stevenson capped off their boys volleyball seasons on May 16 night with league wins. Thus, the two powerhouses will share the NSC championship. He might be a little guy, but Stevenson’s Kihwan Kim runs and jumps like a giant. At last Thursday’s North Suburban Conference meet, Kim pulled a rare double. First, he won the long jump title with a leap of 21-0 3/4. Then, he ran the second leg of the Patriots’ winning 4x100 relay team (43.44). Not bad for a 5-foot-4 sophomore. “It’s usually juniors and seniors.
