Stevenson, junior highs make beautiful music together

Band students from Stevenson High School and six area junior high and middle schools performed Jan. 31 at the Consortium 125 Band Festival in the SHS Performing Arts Center. Students from Aptakisic, Daniel Wright and Twin Groves junior high schools, plus Fremont, West Oak and Woodlawn middle schools were to participate. The Stevenson freshman honor bands were also set to perform. The night before the band festival, choral students from Stevenson and choirs from five area junior high schools performed during the 18th annual Consortium 125 Choral Concert, also at Stevenson. …

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives voted to bar members of Congress and their staff from using inside legislative information in personal stock trading. Members empowered presidents to veto discretionary-spending items providing that both houses of Congress then vote to approve of the rescissions. Members also required new rules for figuring the budgetary impact of federal loan programs. Senators, meanwhile, approved a federal aviation budget, and they advanced a bill to authorize federal road, bridge, transit and highway-safety programs through Sept. 30, 2013.

The bitter cold temperatures that hit the Chicago area over the weekend are expected to give way to snow Monday and then milder weather by the end of the week. Temperatures are expected to climb to 35 degrees on Monday, when there is an 80 percent chance of snow after 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service’s website. Mark Kirk’s condition has been upgraded from “fair” to “good.” Doctors hope to be able to re-attach the 8-inch-by-4-inch section of his skull that had to be removed after he suffered a stroke two weeks ago. Stevenson stages ‘The Miracle Worker’

This past Friday and Saturday, Stevenson High School’s Fine Arts Division staged its freshman-sophomore play, “The Miracle Worker.” The play is based on the life of Helen Keller and her relationship with Annie Sullivan, the educator who transformed her life, according to the school. Chicagoland Jewish High School hosts tree celebration in Deerfield

At least 600 people are expected Sunday at the Chicagoland Jewish High School in Deerfield to observe Tu B’Shevat, the celebration of trees. The annual event, which has free admission and is open to everyone, will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1095 Lake Cook Road.
