The Deerfield Historic Village, 517 Deerfield Road, is open from 2-4 p.m. Sundays through September and by appointment. Visitors are invited to tour five buildings of historic interest, including the 1837 Caspar Ott log house, Lake County’s oldest surviving building. The permanent exhibit is “Deerfield History” from the first settlers through the 1950s. Community

Community Services Day, a free event for residents of all ages, is Sept. 10, at Brickyards Park/Patty Turner Center, Deerfield. The purpose of the event is to promote services available to residents. Community-service clubs and organizations are invited to reserve booth space. The main Community Services Day event runs from noon to 4 p.m., with a passenger/child safety-seat checkpoint from 9-11 a.m. in the south parking lot, A SWALCO electronics recycling/collection activity is tentatively set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. near the Public Works building. From 9 a.m. to noon, a Pet Vaccination and Microchip Clinic will be held near the Patty Turner Center. American Legion Post 738 will present the colors at 12:45 p.m. The Deerfield Lions Club will bring its inflatable mascot, Leo the Lion. There will be balloon twisters and other activities. A helicopter ball drop will be held at 3:45 p.m. Entertainment will be on stage throughout the afternoon. All booth vendors are asked to bring give-away items and/or run some type of game or activity (both to be approved by the CSD 2011 Committee). Performances, games, giveaways, adult programs, inflatable rides for kids, a helicopter take-off and landing, canine-unit demonstration, art tent, residential sprinkler fire demo, “Touch-a-Truck” and mascot activity will be part of the event. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Parking will be available in the 155 Pfingsten office building parking lot (across from Brickyards Park). The event will take place rain or shine. Emergency-services demonstrations and helicopter activities depend upon availability and weather. B’nai Jehoshua Beth Elohim’s Sisterhood (Deerfield) will hold its 1,000+ Family Garage/Resale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 29, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 30 and noon to 7 p.m. Aug. 1. Used adult and children’s clothes, shoes, jewelry, toys, books and household goods will be available. The American Cancer Society, 100 Tri-State International Parkway, Suite 125, Lincolnshire, offers an opportunity for cancer patients to receive free wigs at: the Lake County Regional Office, 100 Tri-State International Parkway, Suite 125, Lincolnshire; Cancer Wellness Center, 2824 Belvidere Road, Waukegan; or Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital, Grayslake Campus, 1475 E. Belvidere Road, Unit 100. The Lake County Regional Office, Cancer Wellness Center and Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital contain wig boutiques that provide cancer patients suffering from the effects of chemotherapy and radiation new wigs, scarves and hats. Volunteers assist patients in finding a wig that fits their personal taste, but also will conduct a wig-fitting to ensure it fits correctly. Deerfield Park District events include:

Summer Samplers – free musical entertainment at Mitchell Pool/Park – from 5-6:30 p.m. each Sunday through Aug. 21. Everyone is invited; Bring a picnic or purchase concessions.

Deerfield Park District’s annual Dive-In Theater is 7-10 p.m. Aug. 6 at Mitchell Pool, located at Wilmot and Hazel. The event is free; no registration is required. A variety of options for pool admission is available. Pool passes start at $63 for the season, with varying rates for individuals. Swim coupons are available at a price of $65 for 10 coupons. Annual Family Campout begins at 5 p.m. July 16 and ends at 8:30 a.m. July 17. Pitch tents and bring flashlights for the event in Maplewood Park, located on Clay Court just south of Hazel. Eat to the Beat on Wednesdays at the Pavilion in Jewett Park brings musical performances and other entertainment to families, especially ones with young children. Admission is free. Eat to the Beat takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and runs through Aug. 17. Lunch and snacks are sold at the concession stand through Cookers of Deerfield or participants may bring a picnic lunch. The pavilion area is adjacent to a playground. Extended Care - For “extended care” options that lengthen the day from as early as 8 a.m. to as late as 6 p.m., children should be dropped off and picked up at the Jewett Park Community Center. Parents are asked to double-check trip information to determine lunch needs. All children should be picked up by 6 p.m. Fee per day of extended care is $20 per resident and $25 per non-resident. Counseling and Referral Services - Margie Fisher, a gerontologist, and Kate Shaw, a social worker, are available for short-term counseling, information and referrals from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Thursday at the PTC. Blood-pressure/blood-sugar testing is conducted at 9:30 a.m. the first Tuesday of each month in the center lobby.

Massage therapy (a half-hour or one-hour available). A 24-hour cancellation notice is required; otherwise individuals are billed for the appointment. A half-hour massage is $35 for PTC members and $40 for non-members. A one-hour massage is $60 for PTC members and $70 for non-members.

Lending Closet offers wheelchairs, walkers, canes, bath benches, commodes and grabber sticks on a short-term basis. Closet hours are 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Senior Car Program. The PTC offers a drop-off/pick-up service for older adults in the Deerfield, Lincolnshire, Bannockburn and Riverwoods area. The service is available by reservation on a first-come, first-served basis.

Middle-school parties resume in the fall.

North Shore Rhythmics provides rhythmic gymnastics training. Preschool NSR classes are offered from 10-10:45 a.m. Saturdays. Young gymnasts are instructed in the basics, including flexibility, dance, musicality, tumbling, apparatus skills and hand-eye coordination. Children 5 years of age and up may sign up for Beginning Rhythmic Gymnastics where athletes work on basic skills, adding more advanced elements and performing basic routines to music, using balls, hoops, ribbon, rope and clubs. Classes are from 4-5 p.m. Tuesdays or Thursdays, 5-6 p.m. Wednesdays and 11 a.m. to noon Saturdays. For gymnasts 6 years old and above who are ready for more difficult skills, Advanced Beginning Rhythmic Gymnastics is held from 5-6:15 p.m. Tuesdays The class prepares participants to move onto the first competitive level. The Sachs Recreation Center Teens ‘N’ Training Fitness Pass offers students under age 16 who are enrolled in high school an opportunity to become a Fitness Center member. Upon completion of the three-hour TNT training class and payment of monthly membership fees, TNT pass holders are entitled to use: Cardiovascular training and strength-resistance equipment; swimming pool and open gym; all group exercise classes (yoga, indoor cycling, kickboxing, dance, etc.); locker room/towel service; and four-lane track (walk/jog/run). Religion

Anshe Tikvah is a Jewish congregation serving the North and Northwest Suburbs. No one is turned away. The first year of religious school is free with membership. Harper College’s continuing education department offers courses for adults 55 years of age and older through the Lifelong Learning Institute. Courses are available to members and non-members. Courses are held on Harper campuses in Palatine and Prospect Heights and at partner sites in Barrington, Wheeling, Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Palatine and Schaumburg.

Road Scholars is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing learning adventures for people 55 years of age and older. Road Scholars offers more than 8,000 learning adventures in the United States and 90 other countries. At The Movies: God’s Message In Popular Films. In a Sunday sermon, Pastor Brian Roots will use films to illuminate Biblical themes and lessons. The movie will be shown at 10 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church. The July 17 film and sermon will be “Field of Dreams” “The Opposition.”

Fabulous Friday Flicks from noon to 3 p.m. Instructor is Bradford. The series is $24 for members and $39 for non-members. Individual sessions are $7 for members and $10 for non-members. Each film is preceded by a 30-minute presentation; a 30-minute discussion is held after each film.

SHIP volunteers are available free of charge to help interpret and resolve problems with medical bills, Medicare, Medicare supplemental insurance, and/or appeals; explain Medicare supplements available for people becoming eligible or who are interested in changing plans; review and explain long-term care policies; and explain the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. Volunteers are available by appointment on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, and on a drop-in basis from 10 a.m. to noon the first Monday of each month.

The Blue Bag Program is a collaborative effort between the Patty Turner Center and the Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Department’s paramedics to ensure that an individual’s wishes are honored at a time of medical emergency. The bag with copies (not originals) of a list of medications, advance directives, Do Not Resuscitate orders, emergency contacts, identification and insurance cards is placed in a home’s refrigerator where medical and emergency personnel know where to find it. The information goes with the patient to the hospital via ambulance staff. It is an optional program and individuals may elect to complete all suggested documents or only what they feel necessary. ACES: Adult Caregiver Education and Support is held from 1:15-2:30 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month.

SE Lake County Faith in Action provides trained volunteers to stay with a loved one. The service is provided by volunteers and conducted free of charge. If you are in need of respite or a ride, call Margie Fischer at (847) 572-2658.

Sports

The Lincolnshire Lightning Soccer Club offers summer soccer camps at North Park, Lincolnshire’s athletic facility. Day and evening camps are offered through July. Let’s Talk! Military Families with Children, Parents and Caregivers from all branches - active, inactive, reserve and veterans including civilian spouses and grandparents (offered through the non-profit Children’s Home & Aid of Chicago) meets from 6-7:30 p.m. every Tuesday at Alexian Brothers Med/Roncoli Center, 600 Alexian Way, Elk Grove Village. Share experiences, feelings and challenges with other military parents and caregivers in a support group. There is free parents care, Share Support Group, a free children’s program with child care specialists and free dinner at every meeting. For Caregivers of Loved Ones with Atypical Dementia - The group meets the third Wednesday of every month in Deerfield. Drop-ins are welcome. A support group meets to address the emotional issues facing parents of special needs children.
