Village Hall displays work of Stevenson artists

LINCOLNSHIRE — The last few days have been big for Stevenson High School’s art pupils.
On Saturday, several photography students saw their works put on display and judged in a professional studio. All this month, a variety of creations from Patriots in the Advanced Placement Art and Photography class have been mounted around Lincolnshire Village Hall, but on Monday, the hall became their open house during a public reception.
“Any time we can provide opportunities for our students to exhibit, it’s a good thing,” said Jon Grice, Stevenson’s fine arts director. “Any way we can connect the community to our programs, we’re excited about it.”
And for the first-of-its-kind Village Hall show, Lincolnshire village manager Brad Burke said he was excited about connecting the community to Stevenson, and other public bodies.
“After working for the village a short time, I was trying to come up with ideas to strengthen the Village’s relationships,” said Burke, whom the Village Board hired last summer. “At the same time, as a new employee with the Village, I was getting to know the Village Hall.
“Much of the wall space in the building is simply bare white or beige walls,” he added.
And conversations with Mark Michelini, SHS’s assistant superintendent for business, and Grice led to the display of 22 sculptures, drawings, photographs and paintings all around the split-level building’s public spaces.
“It’s a great architectural space,” and Grice noted that several Patriots’ creations were placed in the front lobby. “They meet you right there when you enter.”
Another group of Stevenson teens went through another kind of display at Visual Image Photography’s fourth-annual student show at their studio, 600 Northgate Parkway in Wheeling. SHS displayed 10 photographs, among works put up by 13 other schools.
In Village Hall, the AP students’ creations will remain on display until April 4.
