Lake County residents who want to help protect the ecosystem and prevent drug abuse can turn over unwanted drugs with no questions asked to one of the 16 police department locations throughout the county participating in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday.
Fifteen police departments plus Lake County Sheriff’s Office are participating in the fifth annual Drug Take Back Day in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
“We have had a tremendous response to this event in the past, collecting over 200 pounds of drugs in April,” said Sheriff Mark Curran. “DEA has done a great job with these events and we will continue to support their efforts for a very worthwhile cause.”
Expired prescription drugs, unwanted or unused prescription drugs, over the counter drugs in pill form and controlled and noncontrolled substances will be collected free of charge with no questions asked. Liquids and syringes will not be accepted.
Turning in unwanted or unused prescription drugs can prevent drug abuse, according to Waukegan Police Cmdr. Gabriel Guzman.
“We don’t want the general public flushing (drugs) down the toilet. It could harm the ecosystem,” Guzman said.
This is the fifth year the DEA has held National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
About 1.6 million pounds, or almost 774 tons, of prescription drugs were collected at almost 5,700 sites across the country in the four previous take back days, according to the DEA. ~.
