Fund-raisers

The Citizens for Conservation has produced a calendar featuring photographs of CFC properties, as well as resident wildflowers and birds. The card stock of the 8.5-inch-by-11-inch calendar allows page-turning and hangs flat to show the monthly images and calendar grid with CFC events like the Spring Native Plant Sale. CPR/Infant First Aid with Northwestern Memorial Hospital held 6-8 p.m. Jan. 18 at WONDER! Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation and anti-choking techniques for newborns and children through the age of 8. Class is taught in a small-group setting with hands-on practice. Deerfield Public Schools District 109 participates in an ongoing process of locating, identifying and evaluating children who show delays in: cognitive development; social, emotional or behavioral skills; speech; language; fine or gross motor development; pre-academic skills, vision; or hearing. If your child is from birth to age 5 and you are unsure that your child is meeting age-appropriate developmental milestones and would like to participate in an early childhood screening, contact District 109 to register and schedule appointment. Registration for Winter Classes at Deerfield Park District: Walk-In. Registration and resumed online registration continues until winter sessions, beginning at various times in January, are underway. “Horse Crazy Girls” (Activity #252524) offers activities for girls in grades 6-8 and high school to interact with horses primarily on the ground at Equestrian Connection, 600 N. Bradley Road, Lake Forest, in six-week sessions. There are two sessions of programs, all on Tuesdays, in the early evening. PiYo: The program combines Pilates and Yoga elements. Class meets Wednesdays at 10:20 a.m.

TurboKick is a form of kickboxing. Class meets at 9:20 a.m. Thursdays.

For Active Adults 50 years of age and older: Pickleball takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m.-noon. First three sessions are free; subsequent play is $8 for residents and $10 for non-residents. Sessions must be purchased in sets of three. All equipment is provided. The activity takes place in Gym A at Sachs.

The indoor pool is open to members for lap swimming during normal operating hours. Family swim is every Saturday and Sunday from 1-3 p.m. Family swim is free for members, and $4 per person and $8 per family for non-members.

Extended Care - For options that lengthen the day as early as 8 a.m. and as late as 6 p.m., children should be dropped off and picked up at Jewett Park Community Center. Programs: “60 Minutes...” at 12:30 p.m. Mondays. Cost is $5 for members and $8 for non-members. History, psychology, theater, movies and books are discussed.

Sit & Knit (members only) meets 1-4 p.m. Thursdays. Admission is free. Share patterns, learn skills, make friends and knit. Needle-pointers and crocheters are also welcome.

Fabulous Friday Flicks noon-3 p.m. The series is $24 for members and $39 for non-members. Individual sessions are $7 for members and $10 for non-members. Each film preceded by 30-minute presentation; discussion follows.

Book-A-Month Group meets at 10:30 a.m. Fridays. Admission free; registration required.

SHIP volunteers are available free of charge to interpret and resolve problems with medical bills, Medicare, Medicare supplemental insurance, and/or appeals etc., and can explain the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. Volunteers available by appointment on second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, and on a drop-in basis 10 a.m.-noon first Monday of each month.

The Blue Bag Program is a collaborative effort between the Patty Turner Center and Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Department’s paramedics to ensure that an individual’s wishes are honored at a time of medical emergency. The bag with copies (not originals) of a list of medications, advance directives, Do Not Resuscitate orders, emergency contacts, identification and insurance cards is placed in a home’s refrigerator where medical and emergency personnel know to find it. The information goes with the patient to the hospital via ambulance staff. It is an optional program and individuals may elect to complete all suggested documents or only what they want. Adult Caregiver Education and Support is held from 1:15-2:30 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at the Patty Turner Center. SE Lake County Faith in Action volunteers provide trained individuals to stay with a loved one while you attend meetings, free of charge. On-site podiatry services are provided by appointment from 9 a.m.-noon Mondays and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursdays. Call (847) 940-4010.

Blood-pressure/blood-sugar testing is conducted at 9:30 a.m. the first Tuesday of each month in the center lobby.

Massage therapy (a half-hour or one-hour session). A 24-hour cancellation notice is required or individuals are billed for the appointment. A half-hour massage is $35 for Patty Turner Center members and $40 for non-members. A one-hour massage is $60 for Patty Turner Center members and $70 for non-members.

Lending Closet offers wheelchairs, walkers, canes, bath benches, commodes and grabber sticks on a short-term basis. Closet hours are 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Senior Care Program: The Patty Turner Center offers a drop-off/pick-up service for older adults in the Deerfield, Lincolnshire, Bannockburn and Riverwoods area. Service is available by reservation on a first-come, first-served basis.

North Shore Rhythmics provides rhythmic gymnastics training. Preschool NSR classes are 10-10:45 a.m. Saturdays. Children 5 years of age and older may sign up for Beginning Rhythmic Gymnastics. Classes are 4-5 p.m. Tuesdays or Thursdays, 5-6 p.m. Wednesdays, and 11 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Religion

Anshe Tikvah is a Jewish congregation serving the north and northwest suburbs. Tutoring available for individuals wanting to learn to read and understand Prayerbook and/or Biblical Hebrew. Anshe Tikvah offers adults who either missed the chance as a child or are ready for their second (tradition says it is as if you were reborn at 70, so your second Bar/Bat Mitzvah is at 83), the opportunity exists to become Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Scholarships

Applications are being accepted through March 1 for the $2,000 Allen Meyer Memorial Scholarship to be awarded to one high school senior in the Vernon Area Public Library District by Friends of the Library. Applicants must live within the Vernon Area Public Library District, have been accepted into a higher education program for 2012-2013, and either have been an employee or volunteer at the library or be able to demonstrate how the library has affected their life or educational goals. Applicants must submit a completed online form and provide a letter of reference, a letter of acceptance and a copy of their most recent high school transcripts. The online form is available on the Vernon Area Public Library website, www.vapld.info. Look in the menu under “Community > Allen Meyer Scholarship.” Limit one submission per student. E-mail letters and transcripts to friends@vapld.info, to be included with your application. All application materials must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. March 1.
