Entertainment and education go hand-in-hand at the Music Institute of Chicago’s Family Day of Music, March 16 at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Ave., Evanston.
The event begins at 9 a.m. with an Instrument Petting Zoo in the lobby, where children can try various instruments.
“It’s a wonderful way to figure out what a child wants to play — what they’re naturally attracted to,” Music Institute President and CEO Mark George said.
At 10 a.m., there will be a performance of “Peter and the Wolf” by Prokofiev, performed by a faculty orchestra and featuring the Quintet Attacca ensemble-in-residence.
“The Quintet Attacca has done hundreds of programs in schools and community centers around the country,” George said. “They educate about how the different musical instruments communicate ideas related to the story.”
The morning’s activities cost $10 per family of up to six members.
From 2 to 6 p.m. there will be a series of free concerts open to the public.
