There is lots happening at the Vernon Area Public Library this month.

Vernon Area Public Library is pulling out all the stops to welcome library patrons old and new to the library in September.

In celebration of September’s National Library Card Signup Month, those signing up for a Vernon Area Public Library card between September 2 and September 30 receive a free welcome gift. New cardholders of any age can choose from an insulated coffee mug, a plastic tumbler or a cell phone case. Anyone who lives in or owns a business within the Vernon Area Public Library District boundaries is eligible for a free library card. The Vernon Area Public Library District serves all of Lincolnshire and Prairie View, and significant portions of Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, Vernon Hills, and unincorporated Ela and Vernon townships. Visit http://bit.ly/myLakeCounty to confirm eligibility.

Also in September, Vernon Area Public Library patrons who owe fines for overdue materials can clear their obligations with canned goods and other nonperishable food donations. “Food for Fines” runs from September 2 to September 30. During the drive, donors receive a $1 reduction in their owed fines for each nonperishable food item donated at the library. Donations benefit the Vernon Township Food Pantry. Program partners Von Sydow’s Moving and Storage, Inc., and Move for Hunger transport the donations. More than 1,600 items were donated during the library’s last “Food for Fines” drive in September 2013.

Finally, the library welcomes all friends old and new to the second annual “Fall for Your Library Festival” on Sunday, September 21, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. This free afternoon event for all ages features a performance from Big Sadie Bluegrass Band from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and a drop-in craft for ages 5 and up from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Attendees can enjoy complimentary apple cider doughnuts from Lincolnshire’s Didier Farms while supplies last. Library tours, library card signup, Google Glass demonstrations, and a 2-for-1 used book sale are ongoing throughout the afternoon. Registration is required for the bluegrass performance attendance only; call 224-543-1485 or register online at http://calendar.vapld.info.
