State’s Attorney Nerheim honored for prosecuting gangs

Lake County State’s Attorney Michael Nerheim has received an award from the National Gang Crime Research Center for outstanding leadership in prosecution.

The 2014 Frederic Milton Thrasher Award was established by the Journal of Gang Research in 1992 to honor and recognize outstanding scholarship, leadership, and service contributions by individuals and programs dealing with public safety issues posed by gangs.

Nerheim received the award at the Gang Specialist Training Conference this week at the Westin Hotel in Chicago.

“The assistance of not-for-profit agencies such as the National Gang Crime Research Center (NGCRC) supports the ongoing education in the changes of the gang cultures,” Nerheim said. “This education is geared toward all law enforcement officials and it offers the ability to tackle the gang problem in a more efficient and collaborative manner. Organized crime in the form of street gangs continues to present the single greatest threat to our community.”

The National Crime Research Center was formed in 1990. It is an independent nonprofit that carries out research on gangs and gang members, disseminates information through publications and reports and provides training and consulting services

“The drugs and violence that (gangs) bring will not be tolerated in Lake County, “ Nerheim said. “Our communities deserve to live a lifestyle free of violence. I appreciate the support of the NGCRC and thank them for their ongoing assistance.”
