Cruisin’ with the Cops draws hottest, weirdest cars to Lincolnshire

The hottest — and the oddest — came to Lincolnshire Friday night.

The parking lot of the Fresh Market grocery store, 475 Milwaukee Ave., was filled with remarkable vehicles of all kinds on a gorgeous weekend evening for the Cruisin’ with the Cops car show, organized by the Lincolnshire Police Department.

Dozens of sports cars, a gigantic pickup, a hydraulic-powered Monte Carlo classic and even a professional dragster showed up.

So did a BMW Isetta 300, the rare and tiny European import. Yes, that is the car the TV character Steve Urkel drove.

Cruisin’ with the Cops got positive reviews from both visitors and participants.

“It’s so cool,” said T.J. Zizzo, who drove to the event in the Zizzo Racing top-fuel dragster.

“To see them have this here is really awesome,” said Zizzo, a Lincolnshire native.

Zizzo Racing, based in the nearby corporate center, brought an 8,000-horsepower dragster that can reach 330 mph in less than 3.8 seconds, he said. To protect their delicate property — and, maybe, to avert any temptations — police gave them an escort to the site.

Zizzo parked the dragster on the lot’s edge, right behind Tony Perez’s 1978 Monte Carlo, which he made hop and bounce with its hydraulic suspension.

“It’s something different,” Perez, a Mundelein native, said of the Ferraris, Corvettes, Porsches and Lamborghinis that populated most of the Lincolnshire show.

The police event brought in a wide variety of specimens: in one row of parking spots, a Ferrari sat next to a 1932 Chevrolet, which sat next to a GTO muscle machine, which sat next to a Ford F-250 that stood taller than many of the men in attendance, which sat next to a pair of actual import racers.

Jeff Hershman of Northbrook brought his 1977 Corvette, the last of the “shark” models with the flying buttresses. He said he skipped a much larger cruise night in Skokie to check out the Lincolnshire event.
