Former ace Alex Vikartofsky takes over Stevenson softball program

LINCOLNSHIRE — Despite inheriting a roster loaded with youth, incoming Stevenson softball coach Alex Vikartofsky sees bright things on the horizon for her team.

She’ll replace former Patriots coach Larry Friedrichs, who retired as the school’s assistant director of special education in June. Friedrichs had a 515-379-4 record in 27 seasons at Stevenson, but his softball coaching contract was not renewed in June.

The Patriots finished 19-16 season this spring in his final season.

“I think we only have two juniors from the 2014 team who are back and will be seniors in 2015,” Vikartofsky said. “So we’re going to be young. But we’re embracing that challenge. I think we can do some special things here.”
